American Forest Foundation, SFI Blast Wood Standard The Sustainable Forestry Initiative has long voiced its opinion that the U.S. Green Building Council should recognize all credible forest certification programs for a wood certification credit in its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating tool. The American Forest Foundation – coordinator of the American Tree Farm System – added its voice to the fray last week with a strongly worded statement titled “Shutting Out America’s Family Forest Owners.”
In AFF’s statement, President and CEO Tom Martin says, “USGBC is setting benchmarks that only one wood certification system can meet and this one system gets more than 60 percent of its wood supply from overseas. As a result, the potential to support American jobs and rural communities right here at home is ignored. This is troubling because the U.S. wood products industry is facing severe cutbacks and Americans are losing their jobs.” Click here to read AFF’s full statement.
On the cover of its June newsletter, SFI also took a shot at USGBC’s failure to move forward on the issue. “It’s time for the USGB to sunset this lengthy benchmark process, and once and for all recognize all credible forest certification programs,” said Kathy Abusow, SFI’s president and CEO.
