Southern Pine Plays Role at Hotels, Resorts

SFPA members promoted the uses of pressure-treated Southern Pine in the hotel and resort industry at the Exphotel show June 16-18 in Cancun, Mexico. Attending were Richard Kleiner, SFPA’s interim director of international markets; Brian Hayson of Cox Industries, an SFPA Affiliate member company; Mark Richardson of Westervelt Lumber, an Active member company; and Shehzad Bhayani and Taufiq Jivani of Aveesa & Ezyan Ali Enterprises, an Associate member firm.

Richard reported that a steady stream of architects, builders and hotel owners visited the American Softwoods exhibit to pick up information and find sources of supply. The travelers met with marine architect Mauricio Gayol to discuss expanding opportunities for Southern Pine applications and also visited a number of local lumber distributors. The team then got a firsthand look at a high-end application for pressure-treated Southern Pine as an outdoor marine dining area at Lorenzillo’s, an upscale Cancun restaurant.

Fernanda Vale, international consultant for the Southern Pine Council and American Softwoods, coordinated the event. For more information, contact Richard at 504/443-4464, ext. 211, or by e-mail at rkleiner@sfpa.org. To learn more about Exphotel, click here.

Tax Credit Helps Small Employers Provide Health Insurance

Small businesses and tax-exempt organizations that provide health insurance coverage to their employees may qualify for a special tax credit, said the Internal Revenue Service in a recent news release. Included in recently enacted health care reform legislation, the credit is designed to encourage small employers to offer health insurance coverage for the first time or maintain coverage they already have. The credit is specifically designed to help small businesses and tax-exempt organizations that primarily employ low and moderate income workers. It is generally available to employers with fewer than 25 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees and paying wages averaging less than $50,000 per employee per year. Because the eligibility formula is based in part on the number of FTEs, not the number of employees, many businesses will qualify even if they employ more than 25 individual workers. The maximum credit goes to smaller employers – those with 10 or fewer FTEs – paying annual average wages of $25,000 or less. Click here for more information.

Maps Offer In-depth Look at Southern Forests

The World Resources Institute, an environmental “think tank,” recently launched a project called “Southern Forests for the Future.” The project seeks to raise awareness of threats facing the forests of the southern United States and lay the foundation for increasing the acreage that is conserved or managed in a sustainable manner. SFPA members might want to check out the great set of maps offered on the project’s website at www.seesouthernforests.org. The maps provide detailed looks at a variety of factors related to forested land from East Texas to Virginia. They show forest cover gain and loss; species composition; ownership; what areas are protected; and fragmentation. There are also maps showing the factors driving change in various areas, such as suburbanization; fire; pests and disease; climate; and forestry. Sources for the data shown in the maps include the U.S.D.A. Forest Service and the U.S. Geological Survey. Click here to explore the maps.
