Pergola Project Spotlights Treated Lumber

Project designers at WOOD magazine could have chosen any wood they wanted for a new pergola project recently built at their corporate headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa, and they chose pressure-treated Southern Pine. Construction was completed last September in the test garden of Meredith Corporation. The garden is situated between two main avenues in the city’s downtown area, providing some eye-catching visibility for treated lumber.

The project is the cover story for the July 2010 issue of WOOD, and half a million copies are now on newsstands. An illustrated eight-page feature details construction of the pergola from start to finish. Ahead of this article, two pages are devoted to updated facts about the latest preservative and finishing options for building with pressure-treated materials.  Richard Wallace, SFPA’s vice president of communications, worked with the editors to coordinate selection and delivery of the materials needed for the project. SFPA Work Outlined for Forestry Association

Cathy Kaake, SFPA’s senior director of engineered and framing markets, was among speakers at a retreat for the South Carolina Forestry Association’s Board of Directors last week in South Carolina. Cathy spoke to the group about SFPA’s programs and how the association works with other industry groups throughout the country to promote Southern Pine products. She also discussed ways SCFA and its members can help communicate SFPA messages that are mutually beneficial for both associations. “They were appreciative that we came, and we generated some good ideas on how we can work together,” Cathy said. ·         Correction

The location of one of the Georgia-Pacific mills that qualified for SFPA’s 2009 Sawmill Safety Award was incorrectly reported in last week’s newsletter. The mill is located in Columbia, Miss., not Columbus. Congratulations again to all of the SFPA member facilities recognized at our Midyear Meeting this week for operating safely during 2009.
