April 23, 2010 New Deck Site All About Wood
The site explains why real wood is the preferred material, offers specification tips for Southern Pine decking, covers steps in the deck-building process, and more. Links to the American Wood Council’s Design for Code Acceptance: Prescriptive Residential Wood Deck Construction Guide appear throughout the site.
The site, which also features safety information, is available just in time for Deck Safety Month, being sponsored by the North American Deck and Railing Association next month to remind people that annual deck inspections can help prevent deck failures.
Send comments about the new wood decks site to Richard at rkleiner@sfpa.org. For more information about Deck Safety Month, visit www.nadra.org. |

SFPA Chairman Named to Binational Council Adrian Blocker, chairman of SFPA’s Board of Directors, has been appointed to a seat on the Binational Softwood Lumber Council. The council was created by the U.S. and Canadian governments as part of the 2006 Softwood Lumber Agreement. The BSLC uses a portion of the money collected through the SLA to fund initiatives that help support the North American softwood lumber industry and the communities that rely on it.
The group is composed of 12 directors, half representing U.S. interests and the other half representing Canada. In addition to Adrian, members include Jim Lopez of Tembec (Canadian co-chair); Jon Gartman of Sierra Pacific Industries (U.S. co-chair); Duncan Davies of Interfor; Al Thorlakson of Tolko Industries Ltd.; Bob Murphy of Palliser; Paul Perkins, formerly with Weyerhaeuser; Charles Tardif of Maibec; Marc Brinkmeyer of Idaho Forest Group; Hank Scott of Collum’s Lumber Products; Steve Quarles of Crowell & Moring; and James Cummins of The Carbon Fund. Adrian is with West Fraser Inc., an SFPA Active member company. |

SFPA Announces Interim Staff Positions Richard Kleiner, currently SFPA’s director of treated markets, will serve as director of international markets on an interim basis, said SFPA President Digges Morgan. Russell Richardson, SFPA’s director of industrial markets, will take over Richard’s treated market activities. “Richard’s extensive experience with treated, industrial and finish grade products as well as some previous international experience will enable him to represent Southern Pine well in international markets,” Digges said.
Richard joined SFPA’s staff as a marketing manager in 1998. In 2000, he was promoted to director of industrial markets and stepped into the treated markets position in 2003. Russell, who grew up in the forest products business, joined SFPA as director of industrial markets in early 2007.
The international position became vacant when former director, Ned DeJarnette, left in late February to take a job with another association. “We will make a permanent decision regarding the international position after SFPA completes its strategic planning process later this year,” Digges said. “Meanwhile the Board of Directors and I believe Richard and Russell can meet our needs in these extremely important markets for Southern Pine products.” |

Seminar Highlights Benefits of Wood Construction in Seismic Zones A half-dozen representatives from SFPA member companies were among those attending a seminar and trade servicing visits last week in Guadalajara, Mexico. About 20 Mexican importers attended the seminar, which was prompted by recent earthquakes in Chili and Haiti. Edward Keith, a senior engineer with APA, explained the seismic advantages of wood construction, and Richard Kleiner, SFPA’s director of treated markets, followed with a presentation on treated wood product specification and application.
U.S. participants also conducted trade servicing visits during the trip. Attending were Robert Bishop of Tampa International Forest Products; Edward Clessas of Klumb Lumber Company; Guillermo Garza of Arch Treatment Technologies; Ryan Hilsinger of East Coast Lumber; Don Mejia of Atlas Trading International; and Annette Vega of Tampa International Forest Products.
“The trade servicing visits helped SFPA’s members develop a greater understanding of market potential in Mexico for wood products,” Richard said.
The seminar was coordinated by American Softwoods in cooperation with IMEXFOR, the largest national association of wood products importers in Mexico. SFPA, APA and the Softwood Export Council all co-sponsored the event. For more information contact Richard at 504/443-4464, ext. 211, or by e-mail at rkleiner@sfpa.org. |
