April 9, 2010 Raised Floor Living Launches Spring Campaign
The 2010 edition of the Raised Floor
Living campaign is officially
under way. Internet ads launched April 1, and television segments promoting
raised floor foundations along with a “Design Your Dream Home” promotion
ramped up in the Houston area this week.
A series of six short segments
are being broadcast
Each segment also encourages viewers to enter to win the services of a Houston designer to create their own raised floor dream home. Viewers throughout the Houston metro area can enter the “Design Your Dream Home” promotion online at www.RaisedFloorLiving.com until May 9. The winner will be announced live on “Great Day Houston” on May 28 and will be featured on the broadcast along with the designer.
A similar series will air in Charlotte, N.C., beginning April 22 on WBTV’s 5 p.m. newscast. Residents of that area will also be able to win the services of a local designer who will help them design their “dream” raised floor home. Residents can enter at www.RaisedFloorLiving.com April 21 through May 23 with the winner to be announced in the final segment on June 10. The timing is good for bringing the raised floor promotion to Charlotte since the area ranks No. 3 on a “Builder Market Health Index” recently compiled by Hanley Wood Market Intelligence and published by Builder magazine (click here to see).
The spring campaign and promotions are being coordinated by the Southern Pine Council. APA will select designers to help the winning homeowners in both areas design their dream homes; and staff members from both SFPA and APA are participating in the television segments.

Forests and Hurricanes Severe storms can disrupt forest management and normal forestry operating practices for a number of years. To help natural resource managers deal with storm risks and damages, the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources is offering a course called “Forests and Hurricanes: Impacts and Planning Considerations” on July 22. The course provides four continuing education credits in forestry and logger education. Click here for details. |

SPC Site Traffic Improves Traffic on the Southern Pine Council’s Web sites picked up during the first quarter compared to the same period last year, perhaps signaling that interest in home construction and remodeling is starting to recover.
The three sites offer builders, designers and consumers a wealth of information ranging from free downloadable technical guides to answers to frequently asked questions. Visitors to www.southernpine.com can also find a handy “Product Locator,” while the Raised Floor Living sites provide consumers a tool for locating professionals qualified to build raised floor homes.
For more information, contact Georgiann Gullett, SFPA’s communications manager, at 504/443-4464, ext. 216, or ggullett@sfpa.org. |

GBI Announces ANSI-Approved Green Building Standard The Green Building Initiative recently announced the completion of the first American national standard for commercial green building with approval from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The standard, officially named “ANSI/GBI 01-2010: Green Building Assessment Protocol for Commercial Buildings,” was derived from the Green Globes environmental design and assessment rating system for new construction and was formally approved on March 24. The standard was developed following ANSI’s guidelines, which are among the world’s most respected for the development of consensus standards and ensure a balanced, transparent and inclusive process.
“The guidelines set forth by ANSI ensure that this new standard was developed in a way that gives all stakeholders, including sustainability experts, architects and engineers, ENGOs and industry groups a seat at the table,” said Ward Hubbell, President of the GBI. “This is a significant advancement in green building and the standard will be set apart from any green building rating system of its kind.”

Beetle Endangers B.C. Lumber Industry As you’ve probably heard, the mountain pine beetle is causing a major upheaval in the lumber industry of the Canadian province of British Columbia. In fact, the Vancouver Sun recently reported, “A new report on the mountain pine beetle epidemic describes it as one of North America’s largest natural environmental disasters that will put an estimated 16 major sawmills out of business in B.C. and lead to long-term lumber shortages in the United States.” Ted Cushman, who has long covered the construction industry, breaks down the crisis in a recent blog on www.builderonline.com titled “Coming Soon: Peak Lumber.” Click here to read Ted’s blog and see a 10-minute video that aptly communicates how our neighbors to the north feel about the beetle problem. Of particular interest in the video are several aerial scenes showing the beetle-destroyed timberland and a map illustrating how the beetle is spreading. |
